Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

HBOT is a promising adjunctive approach for TBI, with growing research into brain oxygenation, inflammation, neuroplasticity and recovery. At NUMA, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is medically prescribed and individually tailored.

What is Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)?

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when a sudden impact or force to the head disrupts normal brain function. It can range from a mild concussion to a more severe brain injury and may affect a person's physical, cognitive and emotional wellbeing in many different ways.

While many people recover well, others may experience ongoing or evolving symptoms that can affect their health, daily activities and overall quality of life.

How HBOT may Support the Injured Brain

A Growing Clinical Role for HBOT in TBI

A growing body of clinical and scientific evidence is investigating HBOT alongside standard TBI care, with research demonstrating physiological effects and potential improvements in neurological outcomes and recovery.

Daly et al., Journal of Neurotrauma, 2018

Cerebral Oxygenation & Metabolism

A prospective randomised trial in severe TBI found that HBOT improved cerebral oxygen metabolism and blood flow, while reducing metabolic stress and intracranial pressure.

Rockswold et al., Journal of Neurosurgery, 2010

HBOT is used as an adjunct to, not a replacement for, standard medical care and rehabilitation following TBI. Treatment suitability and individual outcomes vary.

Typical Treatment Pathways

Every HBOT programme begins with an individual medical assessment. Treatment is prescribed according to the stage of injury, clinical presentation and treatment goals, with the protocol tailored to each patient.

Early Intervention / Subacute

10–20 sessions

Initiated following injury, with research reporting effects on cerebral oxygenation, inflammation and intracranial pressure.

Chronic TBI Recovery

40+ sessions

Studied for persistent symptoms, with reported improvements in cognition, post-concussive symptoms and functional brain imaging.

Persistent / Refractory Cases

60+ sessions

May be considered in selected patients with prolonged impairment or plateaued recovery, using an individualised protocol based on clinical assessment.

Every treatment plan is personalised. The number, frequency and timing of HBOT sessions vary according to individual clinical circumstances and may change as treatment progresses.

Review 1 of 3
TBI & Concussion

As a person suffering from TBI, migraines on a daily bases as well as chronic pain, I have witnessed in NUMA a representation of the best medical care throughout my long healing journey.

Dr. Nur Ozyilmaz had approached my case from an integrated medical perspective taking into consideration cross disciplines in finding healing methods and solutions. Sharing information and educating me along the way felt like we were partners in my medical journey. She is extremely supportive and is a great listener and reflects her sensitive observations into treatment plans.

NUMA always feels welcoming and comforting. I highly appreciated that the details in the design of the space were created in retrospect of the heightened sensory processing sensitivity of patients.

The staff and medical team were kind, empathetic and friendly where they took genuine interest in my health progression.

After X60 HBOT sessions my symptoms have subsided significantly. I believe the integrative approach we took in parallel to the HBOT have both played a part in my healing. I've witnessed subsided migraines, less brain fog and improved concentration. De-sensitised areas in my body, unresponsive in the past, have also reflected some improvement.

The chambers in NUMA are different to other clinics I had tried out before. The medical grade chambers they use have an added value due to the chamber oxygen concentration levels. Comparatively, I have seen the difference in results that usually take far longer time and more sessions to manifest because of the chamber types they use.

I would highly recommend NUMA as a go-to for hyperbaric chamber treatments. It has addressed for me what was considered irremediable.

Individual experiences vary and testimonials should not be taken as evidence of treatment outcomes.
